Latent TB Infection vs. TB Disease
Not everyone infected with TB bacteria becomes sick. As a result, there are two types of TB: latent TB infection (LTBI) and TB disease.
Latent TB Infection
Individuals with latent TB infection have the TB germ, but do not feel sick. At this stage, they are not able to pass it along to others. If not treated at this stage, LTBI can develop into TB disease.
TB Disease
TB disease causes illness. Individuals with TB disease usually feel sick and haves symptoms that may include cough, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, chills, chest pain, and loss of appetite. They are able to spread TB to others, unlike LTBI. If not treated, TB disease is fatal.
