About the Center

Program Information

Operated by the Washtenaw County Office of the Water Resources Commissioner and the Board of Public Works, the Home Toxics Center seeks to address the environmental and public health effects resulting from improper handling and disposal of hazardous products. Hazardous products can ultimately make its way into our water, soil, and air, causing environmental and public health issues. The best way to prevent this is either through reducing the manufacturing of home toxics or entirely utilizing the products in the way they are intended.

When preparing to buy new products for your home, read the label first to see if it poses a threat. The product may be hazardous if words such as: warning, caution, flammable, poison, danger, corrosive, combustible, toxic, or hazardous are on the label.

This program has collected and properly disposed of over 3.6 million pounds of toxic materials since it began in 1995. All this is recycled, reused, or safely disposed of, and is therefore prevented from impacting public health and the environment.

Important Notice

Never drop-off toxic materials without a County employee to assist you. Leaving toxic materials outside the collection area fence or anywhere in the parking lot is extremely unsafe for our employees and the public and is strictly prohibited. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

In order to use our program, you must be a Washtenaw County resident. Due to legal requirements, we can not accept materials generated by a business or used for a business purpose.
