STATUS: Regular, Full-Time
SALARY RANGE: $35,518.08 - $48,680.32 ($53,548.35 including longevity pay)
LOCATION: 2201 Hogback Rd.


Under the supervision of an employee with higher classification, performs a wide variety of professional direct service, supplemental and auxiliary animal control duties and tasks that require some application of independent judgment.  Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to investigating animal control related calls for service and enforcing statutes relating to the control and disposal of animals.  May serve in or be assigned to any division, section or unit of the Sheriff’s Office as assigned for the overall good of the Office and its efficient and effective operation.


  • Respond to and investigate animal control complaints and calls for service including animal bites and the pick-up and transportation of offending or stray animals.
  • Enforce state laws and local ordinances involving the health, safety, control, and disposal of animals.  
  • Testify in court.
  • Gather investigative information by interviewing and obtaining statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Write accurate, thorough, and complete investigative reports.
  • Respond to and investigate dogs or other animals attacking livestock.
  • Process investigative evidence and property.

  • Respond to and assist in rounding up and returning livestock to owners.

  • Assist and support Deputies with the control of injured, sick, or wild animals.

  • Perform kennel inspections.

  • Collaborate with other organizations on animal or animal-related investigations.

  • Compose correspondence, reports and specialized documents from drafts, notes, recordings, or brief instruction.

  • Research and assemble information from a variety of sources to complete forms or prepare reports; may make arithmetic or statistical calculations.

  • Enter and retrieve data with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform the work assigned; prepare reports using electronic information systems and software; may operate and maintain databases or other automated files and systems.

  • Organize, track, and maintain various records, documents and files; locate information as required for the work; track the issuance of official work-related documents, may purge files and/or prepare information for storage.

  • Act as a representative or liaison of the Sheriff’s Office with community or other groups regarding animal control matters.

  • Provide information and assistance to citizens wherever assigned, including but not limited to answering telephones, providing requested information, taking various reports, and answering general or work-related questions.

  • Transport fleet vehicles, supplies, equipment, and documents or mail.

  • Operate agency machines, computers, calculators, or other technology as necessary to complete duties, responsibilities, and assigned tasks.

  • Perform paraprofessional law enforcement related duties and activities if so required and directed, such as writing reports, directing traffic, and assisting Deputies.

  • Maintain confidentiality of information they process or have access to in accordance with policy, law and professional ethics. 

  • Perform other direct service, support, and/or clerical and support duties as may be assigned and necessary for the overall good of the Sheriff’s Office and its efficient and effective operation, including routine facility maintenance such as emptying wastebaskets, shoveling snow and/or other general cleaning tasks.

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and ability to work at any designated work site.
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test that screens for illegal controlled substances.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment reading and writing comprehension and behavioral test.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment data entry test.

  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation.


The Sheriff’s Office is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day public safety operation.  Work schedules will vary and include nights, weekends, holidays and unanticipated overtime.  The position involves work in law enforcement and public safety settings.  Areas of assignments may change periodically or with limited notice depending upon the need and overall good the Sheriff’s Office


Duties require a basic level of physical fitness, general health and mobility including but not limited to the ability to run, lift, and carry or move reasonable weight and objects for reasonable distances.  Ability to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment and technology including by way of example but not limited to computers, copiers, and calculators.  Vision, normal or corrected, must include the ability to read from printed materials and a VDT screen.  Hearing and speech must be sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.

Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent.  Basic or advance technical training, coursework, or certificates related to the job are also desirable.
