JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, provides program intervention, supervision, placement and other services to offenders based upon identified needs.  Coordinates placement of offender population into diversion programs in cooperation with the courts and criminal justice community.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES 

  • Supervises and maintains caseload for individuals referred to pretrial, intensive post sentence supervision, electronic monitoring, and early release programming.
  • Maintains contact with courts, probation, parole and other criminal justice officials as necessary and appropriate to support and facilitate individual program compliance and options.
  • Maintains essential case documentation, writes reports, prepares orders and submits letters to courts and/or probation departments.
  • Prioritizes needs of Public Act 511 eligible offenders.
  • Refers to appropriate intervention services.
  • Calls treatment programs and referral agencies on a daily basis or as required to coordinate appropriate client placements.
  • Maintains contact with the courts and probation services to follow-up on plans and orders; provides input on diversion programs; informs of preliminary plans.
  • Supervises interns and volunteers as necessary and appropriate in cooperation with a higher classified employee.
  • Writes a variety of letters, internal communications and reports as required.
  • Maintains lists of program participants and keeps statistical data utilizing a variety of software to enroll, track and terminate client activity.
  • Maintains a practical familiarity with the criminal justice system.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with local criminal justice system officials and peer professionals.
  • Frequently updates, probation/parole on the progress and activity of their Public Act 511 clients.
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required.
  • Represents the Office of the Sheriff Community Corrections to the community, relatives of offenders and other parties in a manner consistent with Office mission, strategies and values.
  • Remains current on available resources and programs for the offender population.
  • Performs substance abuse testing utilizing approved technology and equipment.
  • Uses standard office equipment and computers as well as other various technologies in the course of the work. 
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS 

Knowledge of:

  • Criminal justice system operation, principles and practices.
  • Concepts and functions of criminal justice agencies as related to the community corrections function and local plan.
  • Applicable federal, state and local legislation which may have an impact upon community and alternative correctional services. 
  • Research, data, and information recordkeeping, management and analysis; report preparation techniques.
  • Office administrative principles and practices, including the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Computer applications related to the work.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to work at any designated work site. 
  • Must meet qualifications to be a Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) operator.
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain Substance Abuse Assessment Certification is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone.  Duties may require employee to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pound of force constantly to move objects.  Must be able to bend, reach and lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds.   Must be willing to work varied hours, holidays and be on-call.

EDUCATION 

Possession of an Associate’s degree or equivalent coursework in Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology, or a closely related field is preferred.  Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or other advanced degree(s) or certificate coursework in a related field is also desirable.

EXPERIENCE 

One (1) year of experience working in criminal justice, law enforcement, corrections, probation, the courts, social work or in a comparable setting.  Experience working in placement and with automated information systems is preferred.
