[ARCHIVED] From the Director - Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Statement

ANN ARBOR, MI – Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission stands in solidarity with the Black community and peaceful protesters that have made their voices heard within our county and across the country. As Washtenaw County Commissioner, and Parks Commissioner, Ricky Jefferson stated last week, “racism is a parasite - capable of inflicting immense damage to people through systems that have been in place for generations.” We are committed to doing our part to help break down the systems that need to be dismantled and reassembled. We are committed to equity, inclusion and justice.

Simply saying it is not enough. We must live that ethic every day. Our department will continue to pledge resources, provide education and work towards a more equitable future for our community. We will continue to review our policies, procedures and provide continued training for our staff because it is important for the betterment of our community. Commissioner Jefferson put it best, we will continue to “fight for equity and against racism in all the places around the county where it rears its head.” With you, we stand.
