[ARCHIVED] Main Health Department Number Spoofed

newsflash phone scam

The main Washtenaw County Health Department phone number (734-544-6700) has been falsified in a scam to contact random people for sensitive health insurance information or medication information. The Washtenaw County Health Department will never randomly call you asking for your health insurance information. If you get such a call, hang up and do not give out your personal information. If we’re calling you for other reasons, including COVID-19 contact tracing, we’ll leave a message. We never ask for your sensitive insurance, bank account, or credit card information. Contact tracing calls may come from different phone numbers, depending on which staff member is calling you. Learn more about our contact tracing process and how you can help. If you’re not sure if you’re being scammed or not, you can email us at [email protected] and we’ll let you know if the call is legitimate.

Similar scams have also affected other agencies across the state. Information on caller ID spoofing by the Federal Communications Commission can be found at www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id

To report suspected scam calls, you can make a complaint to the Michigan Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 877-765-8388 or online.
