[ARCHIVED] From the Director - Washtenaw County Parks Welcomes New Commissioners

New Commissioners

This past year the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners appointed three (3) new Commissioners to the Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission. We welcome them and are looking forward to the new perspectives and energy they will bring. The three (3) new Parks Commissioners are JoAnn McCollum, representing the Washtenaw County Road Commission; Jason Morgan, representing the  Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners; and Robert Joerg, representing the general public.  We know these three new appointments will bring additional voices to the table, increase the parks perspective, bring new experiences, diversify the demographics and geography.

JoAnn McCollum joined the Parks Commission at the end of July, when her fellow Road Commissioner, Barbara Fuller stepped down from her role as a Parks Commissioner.  JoAnn is a former social worker and educator with extensive experience in community development and organizing. She has a passion for civic engagement and serves as a member of the Health Department’s Community Leadership Team and is president of the New West Willow Neighborhood Association.

Jason Morgan represents District 8 on the Board of Commissioners and formerly served as Chair of the Board. Morgan graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Political Science from Northern Michigan University and later received a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Michigan. Some of his passions include spending time as a community activist, working on issues around LGBT equality, economic inequality and public safety. His goal is to help find a way to provide all the services our residents need in the most efficient way possible to ensure we use our resources wisely.

Robert Joerg graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Albion College and currently works for the Michigan Laborers District Council. As a resident of Washtenaw County, he shares a passion for the parks systems in Washtenaw County and it is his goal to ensure good stewardship of our parks so that they may be maintained for years to come. He also looks to bring a youthful perspective to the Commission with a focus on the evolution of technology and how it can be incorporated into parks, as well as meeting the needs of younger families.

As we move into a new year full of opportunities and new challenges, we are safe in the knowledge that we have Commissioners that will help us guide and meet the needs of our residents, for now and into the future.
