The Washtenaw County Board of Public Works, the Office of the Water Resources Commissioner, and community partners will be sponsoring an Environmental Clean-up Day in Chelsea on Saturday, May 19, 2018. This event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Chelsea High School, located at 740 N. Freer Road. Residents are encouraged to enter the high school complex from Trinkle Road, and then exit onto Freer Road.
This event provides an opportunity for residents to dispose of unwanted household items in a safe and sustainable manner. Many household materials can be brought to this event, including:
- Household hazardous materials (paint, pesticides, cleaning supplies, motor oil, etc.)
- Medications (non-scheduled/non-controlled medications only)
- Sharps (syringes, needles)
- Appliances (refrigerator, dryer, a/c unit, etc.)
- Scrap metal
- Glass bottles
- Rigid plastic (5 gallon bucket, laundry basket, etc.)
- Tires
- Electronics (TV, computer, monitor, etc.)
Materials that will not be accepted at this event include bulky household items (mattress, furniture, etc.), construction and demolition waste (drywall, concrete, wood, bricks, etc.) and household garbage. For proper disposal of these items, please contact the Chelsea Transfer Station at 734-475-7955.
The Chelsea Clean-up Day event is free, but there is a suggested $10 donation per car to help decrease disposal costs and to help maintain this community collection event. Residents can bring up to four tires for free, but a $5 donation is suggested for each additional tire. Residents can also bring one television, appliance or computer, but a $10 donation is suggested for each additional item.
“We are glad to partner with the Chelsea community to host a collection event this year,” says Evan Pratt, Director of Public Works and Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner. “Bring us the items you don’t need, and we’ll make sure they’re taken care of safely.”
This is a service for Washtenaw County residents only, funded and coordinated by the Washtenaw County Board of Public Works, the Office of the Water Resources Commissioner, Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) and the Chelsea Athletic Boosters. All Washtenaw County residents are welcome and encouraged to attend. This collection is intended for residential use only – please, no businesses.
Four additional County Clean-up Days will be held in other communities this year, including June 9 at Northfield Township Hall in Whitmore Lake, June 30 at Lincoln High School in Augusta Township, September 29 at the Thomson Reuters office complex in the Saline area, and October 20 at Eastern Michigan University’s Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti.
