Warm Days Ahead for Washtenaw County
Residents Encouraged to Stay Safe
Ann Arbor, MI – Through Saturday, July 23rd, the National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures at or over 90 degrees and scattered thunderstorms for Washtenaw County. Hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illness. The risk of heat-related illness increases when temperatures remain high for multiple days.
“We encourage residents to stay cool and take precautions to stay safe,” says Gregory Dill, County Administrator, “We are expecting elevated temperatures over the next several days. We want to make sure that residents take good care of themselves and their friends, family, and neighbors. Stay hydrated. Know the signs of heat illness. Stop into a cooling site if you need to.”
Residents who plan to work or spend time outside should take precautions: complete strenuous activities in the morning or late evening. Take frequent breaks out of the sun and wear lightweight, loose clothing. Remember that children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles. Learn more about heat illness. Please call 9-1-1 if you are experiencing signs of heat stroke.
Washtenaw County has coordinated several cooling sites throughout the county where the air is conditioned, water and restrooms are available and electrical outlets are plentiful. We welcome residents to take advantage as needed. Masking is recommended though not required at the sites. The Washtenaw County Learning Resource Center (4135 Washtenaw Ave) is also available as a temporary cooling site on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30am – 5:00pm.
“Our beautiful Michigan summers may not be as long as we would like, but they can be intense.”, shared Commissioner Justin Hodge, District 5, “We want to ensure that residents are taking precautions while working and recreating in the sun.”
If temperatures are forecasted to reach a certain threshold, Washtenaw County will activate an emergency response that includes the availability of expanded resources. This week’s temperatures are not expected to reach that threshold.
