E2P2 Rain Garden Leadership Award Winner- Michael Benham

The Environmental Excellence Partnership Program (E2P2) recognizes leaders in environmental protection. Annual awards are given for notable efforts in water quality protection, waste reduction and recycling, and pollution prevention.  Award winners have gone above and beyond to do what is best for the environment.

As a steward of Swift Run Marsh, Michael has spent considerable amounts of time removing invasive shrubs, planting native shrubs and trees, and scattering seeds. Michael has worked on his own, with our field crew and has led other volunteers.

  • Advocated for doing restoration work in the prairies and improving the stormwater drainage off of Eddy St into Swift Run Marsh.
  • Spearheaded improving the trail systems, which included mapping the new design, physically creating the new trails, and closing off the old trails.
  • Advocated and assisted with creating a Steward Database Map so other natural area and rain garden stewards can connect.
  • Helps coordinate the Huron-Arbor Stewardship Cluster for land managers and other interested groups to collaborate and share work.

Show your commitment to the environment and your community by becoming an E2P2 partner. Participation in the program is free. Participants receive free technical assistance, complimentary audits, community recognition, and more. Learn more by visiting Washtenaw.org/e2p2.
