Commissioner Shink's Newsletter

Hello neighbor,

Serving as your County Commissioner and Chair of the Board is an honor and a privilege.  Thank you! In District 2 and across Washtenaw County, we continue to rise to the challenges presented by COVID-19, extreme weather, and historical inequities that have become only more glaring due to the events of the past year and a half. We’ve worked hard to provide the tools to residents—masks, tests, vaccines—and for some food and shelter—to stay safe and come through this pandemic together. Through all of this, we’ve continued work to make our community more resilient, more equitable, and better prepared for future challenges.

I hear from a lot of people in our community about the need to fix our county roads. From potholes to signal problems, the Washtenaw County Road Commission provides users the ability to report and track service requests and be notified when issues are resolved. Here is that link: https://www.wcroads.org/residents/report-an-issue/

One area that I am very excited to address through the upcoming Washtenaw County Rescue Plan is encouraging generational success. Please join me in considering how we can expand early childhood education, childcare access, invest in high-impact tutoring, childhood savings accounts to encourage graduation and post-high school education and/or a financial empowerment center. These initiatives have the power to change lives for the better. We need your input! What do you think of the proposals for the American Rescue Plan funds? Do you have an idea you’d like us to consider? Please keep reading and follow the link to the survey.

If you’d like to chat, please reach out. Talking with constituents is my favorite part of being a Commissioner! I am also having a town hall about the Washtenaw Rescue Plan next week. Here is a link for more information about the town hall. I hope to see you there!

Washtenaw County Rescue Plan Public Engagement Opportunity

The Commissioners and Washtenaw County staff have developed a list of potential programs, projects, and initiatives for their proposed Washtenaw County Rescue Plan. This plan will leverage multiple funding sources, most notably the American Rescue Plan Act, to ensure a more complete response to the impacts COVID-19 has had on our community. These potential projects have been categorized into 7 priority categories.
